What You Need to Paint on Rocks
Clean, Smooth Rocks. You can scrub
them with bathroom cleaner and a brush. Let them dry.
Pencil to draw on the design. You
can wipe or rinse away the lines and start over if needed.
Brushes- medium and small brushes
are best. Stiff-bristled white brushes from a dollar store will work fine
for getting base coats applied. Use smaller, tapered brushes for lines
and details. Colored Sharpie markers or paint pens will work, too. You
can also use the pointed end of a small brush to apply dots to your designs.
You can make bigger dots with your pinkie finger tip.
Paints- Craft quality acrylic paints
are easy to use, dry quickly, and come in lots of colors. You can also
use tempra (poster) paints, but the paint will wash off if not sealed well.
Some acrylic paints are made to hold up outside if that is where you want
to display your rock art.
Finishing Touches- Shiny or glittery
nail polishes, glitter paint, sequins, and stickers can all be used to
add more detail.
Painting Tips
Remember to rinse your brushes between
colors. Dry the brush slightly so your paint won’t get too runny. If you
make a mistake, use a paper towel to pick up the wet paint or wait until
it dries and paint over it. Always wash out your brushes when you are done
painting so that they will be ready to use next time.
Paint the big spaces of color first, then
add lines and details. It’s a lot harder to paint around details afterwards.
The more painting you do, the better you
will get at it. Collect photos of things you’d like to paint. Looking at
pictures will help you see how to make your paintings look more realistic
and will give you new ideas.
Rock art makes great presents for parents
and grandparents. Or set up a Rock Art Gallery on the sidewalk to show
off your creations- you might just sell some!
