So many people over the years have written to tell me how rock painting has opened up a new world of creativity for them. Finally they found an art form that was fun to do and one that also gave them a sense of accomplishment. “You painted that? I had no idea you were an artist!” friends and family exclaim, and suddenly, because other people think of them as artists, they see themselves in a new light, too. Helping others to uncover hidden talents can be every bit as exciting as helping humble rocks to look like art. Many rock painters are already sharing their time and expertise with new painters. If you haven’t tried it yet, give it some thought. Exposing young people to art is like planting magic seeds in the best kind of soil. My newest book, Painting on Rocks for Kids, is chock full of easy, colorful projects that kids can’t wait to paint. This summer I had the opportunity to introduce rock painting to lots of youngsters, at a summer camp where my daughter was working, at the local library, at a nature center, an after school program, even a 4-H group! I bring along a basket of rocks, with designs drawn on with paint markers. Having the designs already on helps kids to see how different rock shapes work best. I always include lots of fish, bugs, lizards, hamburgers and other easy projects with 'kid appeal`. I also supply a selection of bright paint colors, some paint markers, my older brushes and the tops off plastic containers to use as palettes. Sparkly nail polish in cool colors are also a hit when used for finishing touches.. Whether you teach a class or just invite a grandchild or young neighbor over to paint with you, I guarantee you will learn almost as much as your students and you may just be helping to create our next generation of artists! Always wanted to take a rock painting class? I will be teaching two sessions Fri. Nov. 1st at the Tole Country Painting Convention in Oklahoma City, OK. Check out www.tolecountry.com or write Janette at DWardFarm@aol.com for more info. I will also be at Fergie's Art Supplies in Pinellas Park, FL on Sat. Sept. 28 to introduce kids to rock painting with several free morning and afternoon sessions. Time is set aside from noon to 1:30 to sign books and talk about rock painting, so if you live in the St. Pete/Tampa area, please come! I’d love to meet you! The address is: 8730 49th St. N, Pinellas Park, FL Phone (727) 545-3713 **************************************************** Another rock magazine is scheduled to go on sale this fall. It will have colorful Christmas cottage rocks on the cover. Have you developed a unique rock art design? We would like to feature ‘guest artists’ in upcoming issues.
