Hello to all my fellow rock
painters!
Meanwhile, I got exciting news that I’ve been invited to make an appearance on The Carol Duvall show, also on HGTV, scheduled to be taped this March. No idea yet when it will actually be broadcast. I will be sharing techniques for making easy and attractive flower rocks. The big highlight this spring is the arrival of book #7, scheduled to arrive in April. Judging by previous books, it will take 3-4 weeks to get from the warehouse into stores. My favorite part of doing this book was the discovery of a ‘rock sculpting’ technique that makes it possible to add even more dimension to rocks. All you need is a tube of 527clear cement type glue (available in the craft area at Wal-Mart) and a tube of Leeches Real Wood Putty, Plastic Wood or other filler type product containing acetone. These two materials react to one another like epoxy, creating a bond that is tough and solid when dry. I used this combination along with driveway gravel to make additions to my rocks, including long willowy necks for giraffes! More recent creations included attaching triangular bits of gravel to form pointed ears on cats and foxes. Such additions help overcome the problem of low profile, ‘disappearing’ ears on flatter rock shapes. Enhanced rocks can be quite eye-catching and fanciful. One fun project was a piglet with a round pebble snout. Four longer rock bits made a set of sturdy legs. Once the rocks are bonded, plain wood filler covers up the joints and provides a seamless painting surface that makes it impossible to tell what’s underneath. There are purists who prefer to paint rocks just as nature made them, and I fully understand that sentiment. But there are also plenty of people living in areas without abundant supplies of suitable rock shapes or sizes. Augmenting rocks with pebbles, gravel and other small bits of rock is just one more way of being creative with this art form, and the secure bond now possible makes it is as close as you can get to sculpting a rock without using a mallet and chisel! I was just informed that the next issue of Painting on Rocks magazine has been put on hold. Management at the publisher wants to review all special interest publications before proceeding with any of them. My editor seems to think that production will resume once the review is done, since Painting on Rocks magazine has proven to be so popular, but this won’t happen in time for an issue this year. Perhaps distribution will be improved by then. I still have copies of the most recent issue available. You can find details for ordering it on my website, www.linwellford.com I was really touched when a talented rock painter who also works at the Pentagon sent me a small remnant of the portion of rock wall that was destroyed on 9/11. He had cut pieces into shapes and incised the date onto the surface. It is so simple and yet such a powerful tribute. Thank you again, Marion! The 4th annual Rock Painter’s Get-Together has been scheduled for June 11-13 in Golden Missouri, about 30 minutes west of Branson. Hosts T.Joe and Wandra Dees have organized this informal and fun event in the past and are looking forward to another great weekend of painting and sharing (and eating!) surrounded by the beauty of Ozark lakes and mountains. Last year we talked about gathering Friday morning for a “rock safari” to collect painting materials from a favorite spot. I had another painter from New York state ask if there might ever be an East Coast get-together. Anyone interested in hosting such an event or attending can contact me and I will see if we can put something together. Tera Leigh, founder of ToleNet
and its wonderful Memory Box program, interviewed me recently for a radio
broadcast about living the creative life. To listen to it, go to Tera’s

You will need Real Audio to hear it but there is also a link provided
