Lin Wellford’s Rock Art News- Winter 2007 A belated Happy New Year.
2006 was a wonderful year and I hated to see it go. This summer and fall
flew by in a whirl as I completed work on a new book, Painted Garden Art
Anyone Can Do.
When I was writing for another publisher, I would work alone on my projects, taking photographs and figuring out the how-to instructions. I would then pack everything up and send it off for someone else to shape into a book. When a package arrived many months later, there was always a dramatic moment when I got my first glimpse of my newest offspring. Now that I am my own publisher, I’m reminded a bit of the difference between those vague and fuzzy sonograms we were shown of our infants in utero, verses the crystal clear images of my unborn grandchildren, so detailed that you could make out the hairline, the shape of noses and the length of the fingers! And yet, those little babies were no less miraculous when they arrived for our having had that clear peek at them beforehand. So it is with this newest book. I have labored over each page, each image, each word, yet I know that when I finally hold the finished book in my hands sometime this spring, it will feel every bit as amazing to me as my very first book did. What I am most excited about this time out is that this book presents some truly innovative ways of using common, inexpensive landscaping elements to create wonderful garden accents, borders, flower beds and focal points. People who live in urban areas and places where there are few natural rock resources will have no trouble getting their hands on the raw materials for these projects. And because the materials are standard sizes and shapes, I was able to include full size patterns so that anyone can make these fun pieces, even if they don’t think they have any creativity at all, (which I, of course, doubt is the case!) You can see some images from the new book at my website, www.LinWellford.com. One project included in the new book is the faux fish pond that so many people have asked for since I first painted one as a ‘more ideas’ rock in Painting Pets on Rocks. There are also projects using
natural river rocks and fieldstones for those who have easy access to them,
and as always, I included lots of ‘more ideas’ pieces as well, to inspire
readers to try their hand at even more options.
