ROCK ART NEWS from Lin Wellford Thank you for signing up to receive my newsletter. Periodically I will update you on what's happening in the world of rock painting along with some "pointers for painters" and other tidbits I hope you'll find interesting. Note: Yahoo.com also has a rock painting web club for us! The BIG news is that my newest book (Painting Flowers on Rocks) is scheduled for release April 1st! I've seen it advertised in a few painting magazines already. People who aren't involved in publishing are often surprised to hear just how long it takes for a book to go from being an idea to a proposal to an accepted project with a contract and due date. Then it can take nine months to a year to assemble the projects, take the pictures, make the sketches and write the instructions. All that material gets turned over to a friendly, helpful editor who pares down wordy passages and corrects grammar and spelling errors my spell check didn't catch. Page layouts are created for the entire book, which are sent overseas to Hong Kong for printing and binding. The finished books are packed up and sent back on an exceedingly s-l-o-w boat and finally find their way into the distribution system. Start to finish it can often take 2 years or more! By then I've practically forgotten what was in it. Like any new mother, I cradle my creation and check it over page by page. I'm fortunate to have a wonderful publisher who takes pains to insure that their books are about as perfect as can be. At least I've been able to enjoy the fruits of my labors all year long as I have the rock plants and flowers created for that book decorating my front porch. It's been quite a treat to have those colorful blooms greet me at the door on the gloomiest of midwinter days. Hopefully it's an idea that will give new meaning to the term 'rock garden.' If you're a decorative painter, you might be interested in the Society of Decorative Painting's National Convention, which will be held in Wichita, KS this year. The dates are May 19-22, 1999. In addition to sharing a booth on the trade floor with North Light author Peggy Harris, I'll be teaching two weekend classes, one for white Persian cats, and another for a quaint Tudor style rock cottage. Have you discovered DecoArt's Patio Paints yet? They are made to order for rock painters as they were specifically formulated to resist weathering and to bond with rock and cement surfaces. They offer an excellent range of colors, though I still have to custom mix my stand-by Burnt Sienna (3 parts Patio Brick, 1 part Woodland Brown) ************************ Pointers For Painters... Many beginning painters don't add enough water to their paint. For crisp fur lines that don't split, the paint should be nearly as loose as ink. Experiment on newspaper until you get a consistency that's neither runny nor too thick. Remember to keep adding water as you go along. How are you holding your brush? Long script liners can carry lots of paint, but it's tempting to try and drag the brush. Instead, try using just the tip, keeping the brush nearly perpendicular to the rock surface. I think you'll notice a big difference in the quality of your fur and details. Haven't tried painting yet? I suggest that new painters start with houses. They are easy and fun! Lin Wellford
