Painting Pets on Rocks by Lin Wellford

The animals we live with occupy a special place in our hearts as well as our homes.  Painting Pets on Rocks offers rock painters a menagerie of new animals to try, from colorful tropical fish to guinea pigs, brilliant parrots, several new cats and a pack of dog projects.  There is a gallery of more unusual pets for added inspiration.

Among the cats done step-by-step are solid white and solid black animals, both of which present interesting challenges to painters. Elegant Siamese cats are another oft-requested breed that is offered. Dogs presented a perplexing problem as I knew that no matter which breeds I chose to include, I would have to leave out many others that are every bit as beautiful and popular.

My solution was to choose a variety of dogs that typified certain standard types. So if you have a Labrador Retriever, the directions for sketching a Dalmation should be a big help in getting the features right. The Irish Setter is similar to a Golden Retriever or Collie.  Study the Bulldog and you'll have an idea of how to master other dogs with pushed in faces. And I hope my bright- eyed Yorkies will serve as a guide to painting other tiny toy dogs. There is even a chapter devoted to helping you see how photographs of actual pets can be used to paint a truly unique pet portrait.
